Not since Braveheart has there been such a furore about kilted warriors on the TV. As Outlander comes onto British screens for the first time, we finally get to see what the rest of the world has been getting so excited about. It’s also time to create a new itinerary with a view to making the show a reality for visitors to Scotland.
We’re playing catch up over here but Outlander has already become a massive success story in North America in particular. Without giving too much away the plot centres around a post WW2 English couple who visit Scotland and, due to the mystical powers of some Standing Stones, fall separately victim to the full effects of time travel. The georgeous and inquisitive Claire is taken back to the politically explosive time of the Scottish Jacobites. With that, all you need to do is throw together an underwear-less heartthrob in a kilt and a lass in constant distress and you’re off! Add some superb scenery and some terrific characterisation and watch the pandemonium ensue….
I confess to never having read the books of Diana Gabaldon but am delighted to see her creative talents getting a fanatical worldwide fan club. I’m even more delighted that it has become yet another reason for Scottish tourism to get even more chuffed with itself. I am a big fan of the show and am relieved that it has finally found its way onto UK television. Having let the filming for Game of Thrones slip through our fingertips, Outlander is simply great news for Scotland. Boasting so many locations steeped in fascinating history and with amazing natural locations all over the country, Scotland is well worthy of the fanfare.
For those that have already seen some of the show you will no doubt have noticed that it benefits from some superb scenery. Urban and rural, it is clear that much time was spent picking out only the best locations for filming. Which is where we come in. Alongside David Weinczok, a fellow Scottish history fanatic, we’ve put together an Outlander itinerary of top locations throughout the country. Whether you want to follow in the steps of the cast visiting the likes of Castle Leoch and the show’s own Fort William or you want to immerse yourself in the incredible story of the Scottish Jacobites (or both!), our picks make it possible. As a teaser you can also take a look at my top picks for Outlander filming locations, including mystical Craigh na Dun.
Our Outlander itinerary is currently priced at £5 and is available through the Itineraries page. Each of our chosen locations around Scotland is discussed in length and, as with all of my itineraries, comes with its own digital Outlander itinerary map to help with your destination planning.
